DIRECT CREMATIONS
DIRECT CREMATION is
normally a mode of disposition selected where no viewing, visitation, rites,
rituals or ceremonies are planned or conducted. Following cremation, the
remains left are collected by the crematory and returned to the family in a
rigid utility urn. This urn is suited for burial in most cemeteries
requiring a rigid container for burial. A wide selection of urns,
including keepsake urns companion urns and jewelry are available at the
funeral home. Cremation urns are not required for burial in most
cemeteries. Burial vaults for cremated remains or cremation urns may be
required by some cemeteries. In Michigan, it is NOT Illegal
to scatter cremated remains on the ground, over water or from the air. A
remains DOES NOT HAVE TO BE embalmed to be cremated PROVIDED THAT the
cremation take place within 48 HOURS OF DEATH. If cremation will take
place beyond that time frame, most funeral homes require embalming for
sanitization and safe staff handling of the remains. Normally, in that
instance, some sort of charge will be made for embalming.
