Mrs. Elizabeth A. Sabon of Ludington

Elizabeth A. Sabon, age 89, died November 29, 2011. She was born August 12, 1922, in Scranton, Pennsylvania, to John and Elizabeth (Bubil) Lewis. She had lived in the Ludington area the past 35 years. On October 25, 1941, in Detroit, she married William M. Sabon, who preceded her in death in 1977. A homemaker all her life, Mrs. Sabon was a Communicant member of St. Simon's Catholic Church in Ludington. She was preceded in death by her parents, a son-in-law, Daniel Yennior, and 3 brothers.

FAMILY: 1 daughter, Margo Yennior of Ludington; 1 son, Tom (Karen) Sabon of Southgate; grandchildren, Justine (Nathan) McClellan, Ty Yennior and Danny Yennior, all of Ludington, Clinton Sabon (fiancee, Melissa) of Southgate and Renee Sabon of Woodhaven; 4 great-grandchildren, Samantha Yennior, Kylie McClellan, Dillon McClellan and Lauren Yennior, all of Ludington.

FUNERAL LITURGY: Friday, December 2, 2011, at 11:00 AM, at St. Simon's Catholic Church, 700 E. Bryant Rd., Ludington, with the Rev. Fr. Thomas A. Schiller presiding.

VISITING TIME: Friday, 10:00 AM until service time, at the church on Bryant Rd.

Mrs. Dorothy M. Skvarla of Ludington

Dorothy M. Skvarla, age 82, died September 29, 2011. She was born February 20, 1929, in Ludington, to Frank and Mary (Kubiak) Gadziemski. She was married to Edward Skvarla, who preceded her in death in 2005. She worked at Star Watch Case Co, Memorial Medical Center and Pinecrest Resort. She was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church and St. Simon Catholic Church. She was also a member of the Catholic Daughters and volunteered at Baywood/Tendercare Nursing Home. Mrs. Skvarla was preceded in death by a son, Frank Skvarla, 1 sister and 2 brothers.

FAMILY: A daughter, Marty (Emmett) Smith of Custer; a son, Ronald (Linda) Skvarla of Montague; 3 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL LITURGY: Monday, October 3, 2011, at 11:00 AM, at St. Simon Catholic Church, 702 Bryant Rd., Ludington, with the Rev. Fr. Wayne B. Wheeler Jr. presiding. Interment will be in Pere Marquette Cemetery.

VISITING TIME: Sunday, 4-7 PM, at Clock Funeral Home of Ludington, 309 S. Washington St., Ludington. VIGIL SERVICE: Sunday, 6:15 PM, at the funeral home in Ludington.

Mr. Russell J. Sladick of Ludington

Russell J. Sladick, age 85, a long-time Hamlin resident, died April 14, 2012, in Ludington. He was born May 13, 1926, in Ludington, to Frank and Hattie (Koudelka) Sladick. A graduate of St. Simon High School, he was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, and later, St. Simon Catholic Church. Mr. Sladick proudly served in the US Army Air Corps during World War II, and was a member of Disabled American Veterans and Ludington American Legion Post #76. He worked as Dairy Manager at Giant Super Markets. He was preceded in death by a brother, Raymond, a sister, Dorothy Nelson, a brother-in-law, Melvin Nelson, and a nephew, James Nelson, proudly serving in Vietnam and was listed as MIA.

FAMILY: 3 nephews, Dennis (Sandra) Nelson of OH, Gary (Shelley) Nelson of Ludington and Robert (Cheryl) Nelson of Beaverton; 6 grandnieces & grandnephews; 5 great-grandnieces & grandnephews.
SERVICE: Private services have been held.

Mrs. Mary L. Staup of Lebanon, OR (formerly of Ludington)

Mary L. Staup, age 87, of Lebanon, OR, formerly of Ludington, died December 16, 2011, in Oregon, of complications of cancer. She was born October 19, 1924, in Mulliken, Michigan, to Archie and Reva Wellman. She grew up and went to school in Grand Ledge. Mary was married and divorced from Edgar Pearl Staup, who preceded her in death. Mary had two children, David R. Staup of Lebanon, OR, and Helen D. Osborn of Ludington.

She worked for many years for the J.C. Penny Co. in Ludington. She then worked for Montgomery Ward Co. in the credit department where she retired. Mary had never flown on an airplane until 1998 when she went to Hawaii for the first time with her son and daughter-in-law. It was there she first became ill with the first of several different types of cancers that she beat.

Mary moved to Oregon in 2000 to be with her son and his family who then lived in Millersburg. Mary loved her pets(that were really her son's, but thought that Grandma belonged to them), with Nicky and Susie a constant fixture on her lap. She was good with animals and they all knew she was a soft touch. Mary also enjoyed listening to her radio and to audio books after she lost her vision to Macular Degeneration.

She was preceded in death by her parents and only brother, Elmo.

She is survived by her son, David, and his wife, Joyce, of Lebanon, Oregon, and her daughter, Helen Osborn, and her husband John, of Ludington; grandchildren, David R. Staup II and Neil Staup, both of Lebanon, OR, Felisia Staup of Eugene, OR, Natasha Staup of Portland, OR, Tanya Osborn of Ludington, and Lisa Briskorn of Holland; great-grandchildren, Zachary, Tyler, Megan and Ayden; many great-nieces and great-nephews.

Burial will take place in Lakeview Cemetery, Ludington. There will be no services. Viewing is planned for Wednesday, December 21, 2011, from 11:00 AM until 12:00 PM (noon), at Clock Funeral Home of Ludington, 309 S. Washington St., (231)843-2531.

Mrs Ruth H. Stephens of Hamlin Township, Ludington

Ruth H. Stephens, age 86, of Hamlin Township, passed away May 1, 2012, at Nortin Audubon Hospital, in Louisville Kentucky, surrounded by her loving family. She was born May 17, 1925, in Ludington Michigan, to Frank and Sophie (Unitis) Gorzynski. Ruth graduated from St. Simon High School. Shortly after graduation, Ruth was married to Howard E. Stephens on June 15, 1943. She began her career working with Finnlings Insurance in Ludington, then after being a Pink Lady, she began working at Memorial Medical Center until she retired in 1984. Ruth’s husband Howard preceded her in death in 1992 and she was fortunate enough to find love yet again with Walter A. Stephens. Ruth was an active member of the Catholic Daughters, Girl Scouts of America and a member of Saint Simon Catholic Church. She will be remembered for her kindness, her love, and her strength. She was a wonderful woman that made a difference in the lives of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, as well as the community. She will be missed dearly. Mrs. Stephens was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband Howard E. Stephens.

FAMILY: Her Husband, Walter A . Stephens; her children, Joseph (Karen) Stephens of New Port Richey, Florida and Sophie (Dick) Stephens of Midland; her grandchildren, Shannon Stephens, Katherine (Niklas) Hill, Suzanne (Terrance) Warren, John S. (Kari) Dolembo; and her great grandchildren, Tayler, Kailey, Kadence, Charlotte, Kameron, Dylan, Brennan, Reece, Morgan, and Kinsey. Also surviving is her brother, Joseph Gorzynski of Ludington.

FUNERAL LITURGY: Monday May 7, 2012 at 11:00 AM, at St. Simon Catholic Church, 702 E. Bryant Ave., Ludington, with the Rev. Fr. Wayne B. Wheeler Jr. presiding. Interment will be made in Pere Marquette Cemetery in Ludington at 2:00 PM.

VISITING TIME: Sunday, May 6, 2012 from 2 – 5 PM, at CLOCK funeral Home of Ludington, 309 S. Washington Ave. (231-843-2531). A VIGIL SERVICE will be held, at the funeral home, Sunday, at 5:00 PM.

Mrs. Marion A. Waters of Ludington

Marion A. Waters, age 85, died Friday, October 28, 2011. She was born April 28, 1926, in Chicago, to Salvatori and Anne Disclafani. She had worked for many years in Chicago area. Mrs. Waters was preceded in death by a son, David Waters, in 2004.
FAMILY: 1 son, Tom (Patricia) Waters of GA; 2 grandsons, Michael Waters and Adam Waters.

VISITING TIME: Sunday, October 30, 2011, from 2-4 PM, at Clock Funeral Home of Ludington, 309 S. Washington St., Ludington, with Graveside Committal rites at 4 PM at the funeral home. Interment will be made in Lakeview Cemetery, Irons.

Mr. Christopher M. Wenzel RN of Ludington

Christopher M. Wenzel, age 53, died on December 1, 2011, in Ludington, at his home, surrounded by his family, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born March 11, 1958, in South Haven, to Clarence and Marilyn (Shoop) Wenzel. He had lived in the Ludington area the past two years, coming from Alaska. A graduate of Regents College in New York, Chris worked as a Registered Nurse for 30 years, last in Fresenius Medical Center in Soldotna, Alaska. On January 20, 1996, he married the former Kathy A. Lotz in Florida. He was preceded in death by his father, Clarence "Pic" Wenzel, in 2006.

Chris loved photography, especially taking pictures of nature and the many sunsets over Lake Michigan. He loved playing with his son, Ian, spending time with family and friends, and helping out at Ian's school. He also loved music, traveling, living and experiencing the many different places he lived and visited over the years. His strength, courage, humor, compassion and adventurous spirit will be truly missed.

FAMILY: His wife, Kathy; a son, Ian; his mother, Marilyn Wenzel of South Haven; a sister, Julie (Scott) Reed of FL; 2 brothers, Tim (Tammy) Wenzel of Midland and David Wenzel of South Haven; an uncle, Carroll "Cal" (Shy) Shoop; cousins, Dr. Mike Shoop of NM, Bill (Julie) Shoop of Coldwater, Danny (Ann) Shoop of Novi, Martha Shoop of Zeeland, Kalthleen (Chuck) Frisbee of Constantine, Ed III (Carol) Shoop of Grand Rapids and Linda (Larry) Bixler of Shelbyville.

MEMORIAL SERVICE: Will be held Sunday, December 11, 2011, at 2:00 PM, at Ludington United Methodist Church, 5810 Bryant Rd., Ludington, with the Rev. Thomas J. Evans officiating.

Mrs. Evelyn R. Weslock of Lake Wylie, SC
(Ludington summer resident)


Evelyn R. Weslock, age 86, died Friday, November 11, 2011, in Lake Wylie, SC. She was born December 10, 1924, in Big Rapids, to William and Rose (Johansen) Krupp. She was married to E. B. "Mike" Darling, who preceded her death. Later, she was married to Ernest Weslock, who survives her. Mrs. Weslock worked as a bookkeeper and secretary for Top Value Stamps in Grand Rapids, MI for 12 years, retiring in 1980. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church of Ludington, MI and of All Saints Lutheran Church of Charlotte, NC. Mrs. Weslock was preceded in death by her son, Gerald Raab and step-son, Arthur Darling, 4 sisters and 2 brothers.

FAMILY: Her huband, Ernest; 2 sons, Paul Darling of Pensacola FL and Tom (Patti) Darling of Ludington, MI; step-daughter, Diana Darling (George) Spees of Holland, MI; brother, Gordon (Kaye) Krupp of Tacoma WA and 8 grandchildren.

VISITING TIME: Saturday, 10:00 AM until service time, at the church, in Ludington.

SERVICE: Saturday, November 19, 2011, at 11:00 AM, at St. John's Lutheran Church, 209 N. Rowe St., Ludington, with the Rev. Thomas V. Boehne officiating. A luncheon will be held at the church immediately following the service. Interment will be made in Lakeview Cemetery, Ludington.
